Can't sleep?  You're not alone!

Over my 30 years in practice, one of the true pandemics I have seen is sleep deprivation. The traditional medical community has finally and officially recognized lack of sleep as an "epidemic" within the medical community.

Sleep is a critical foundation of immune as well as mental health.  If only we would treat it with the same attention that some other "pandemics" receive!

Jokes aside, I don’t mean to diminish this serious problem in any way.  Sleep is the foundation of your health and some of the most serious potential problems associated with chronic sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, or stroke and well as obesity, depression, impairment in immunity and lower sex drive.

No doubt we are busier than ever, have more screen time than ever, and have no lack of things to worry about these days.  But truthfully your sleep is the quickest and most relaxing way to a better state of health.

Traditionally you may have been reaching to melatonin for help, but is it the right supplement for you?  Melatonin, while a critical component of sleep and a very powerful antioxidant, is not the only supplement to look for.  Melatonin will help stimulate sleep and keep you asleep, but its production starts in the gut and if you have a busy mind, and high levels of anxiety you will stop producing this critical hormone.

Formulated for a busy, overactive mind, try Opti Natural ZZZ's:

  • Opti Natural ZZZ's is a natural botanical approach for addressing acute stress, anxiety, and a racing mind.

  • Opti Natural ZZZ's includes valerian root, a well-known herb used to help with sleep-related issues and to produce a state of relaxation. Passionflower and jujube which have been used historically to produce a state of relaxation, and relax those who have overstimulation and scattered thoughts, and L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, use to supports resilience to stress by increasing alpha brain wave activity.

  • Opti Natural ZZZ's is designed to address stress and anxiety that drives beta brain wave activity. This should be looked at for more of an acute remedy to right the ship before neurotransmitter stores become imbalanced/depleted.

Working in tandem or as a stand-alone with Natural ZZZ's we also offer

Opti PS Sleep:

  • Opti PS Sleep contains Phosphatidylserine which supports cognitive health, helps support adrenal health, improves resilience to stress and enhances memory, focus and sense of calm.

So, you must start your sleep change from the right place.

I mostly see a lack of sleep, driven from a place of anxiety, a racing mind, and adrenal overdrive, and who doesn't have a reason for those this year?

Besides sitting in meditation, fixing a busy mind can be assisted through natural ingredients and well-formulated adaptogens.  Honestly, these ingredients might be the thing that get you to a place that makes meditation comfortable and perhaps even enjoyable.

Natural, well studied herbs can help calm the body and nudge you into a place of rest and digest and homeostasis, while gently encouraging the switch from alpha brain waves to the more restful, restorative, and calming beta brain waves.

2 capsules per day for optimal immune support

2 capsules twice per day for immune challenges

Best to be taken 30-60 minutes before bed.

Moreover, is extremely important to establish good sleep hygiene. Practicing good sleep hygiene is helpful for any person that is looking to support their sleep cycle and ensure a restful night’s sleep. Recommendations for optimal sleep hygiene are as follows:

  • Avoid caffeine (after 3 p.m.) and alcohol (after dinner). Intake of either, particularly later in the day, can significantly disrupt the sleep cycle.

  • Minimize lighting and use of electronics (T.V., smartphone, computer) 60 minutes prior to sleep time in order to induce relaxation. Keeping the lights dim before bedtime will facilitate the release of melatonin from the pineal gland.

  • Avoid visible clocks and clock watching. Keeping track of the time spent not sleeping can be stressful. The light emitted from a clock can also disrupt sleep.

  • Write down a list of tomorrow’s tasks in order to sleep worry-free.

  • Keep the bedroom cool (65 – 67°F). Keeping the face cool (and your hands and feet warm) can induce sleep and enhance melatonin production.

  • Take a hot bath or even better a hot detoxing sauna before bed - the rise in body temperature followed by rapid cooling stimulates deep sleep Thera360 PLUS Portable Sauna - Black

  • The bedroom should be kept dark and quiet.

  • Pets should be kept outside the bedroom at night.

  • Invest in a quality pillow and mattress.

  • Increase exposure to bright light or sunshine in the morning.

  • Regular exercise. Getting regular exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality. Moderate- intensity exercise, preferably in the morning or early evening, is best.
